Passport Application Procedures

PASSPORT APPLICATION PROCEDURES

1. Applicant must provide documentation showing U.S. citizenship/nationality.  Five ways of  acquiring United States citizenship are:

  1. Birth in the United States
  2. Birth abroad to U.S. citizen parent(s)
  3. Naturalization
  4. Derivative naturalization
  5. Foreign born, adopted by U.S. citizen parent(s)
    - born on or after February 28, 1983
    - under 18 years of age at time of adoption

2. Applicant must provide valid identification.  Primary acceptable identification includes:

  1. Current valid driver.s license
  2. Current state-issued ID card
  3. Current valid US passport (issued to an adult)
  4. Naturalization Certificate issued to an adult within last five years
  5. Current military ID card issued to an adult
  6. Current Resident Alien Registration Card (this is only acceptable for a parent when identifying a minor child or applying for a minor child or acting as an identifying witness)
  7. Current aircraft pilot.s license . FAA issued
  8. Current university/college photo ID card
  9. Acceptance clerk.s thorough personal knowledge of the applicant for 2 or more years, also stating the basis of that personal knowledge, e.g. .neighbor., .through business., etc. (this is not acceptable for an applicant who is a minor under 18 years of age)

3. Two (2) duplicate photographs must accompany application.  Photos may be taken at the Township Clerk.s Office.

 

 
4. Fees
  a. Passport Books
  If you are 16 years of age or older, you will need 2 checks, money orders or cashier.s checks, made payable as follows:
    i: To U.S. Department of State $75.00
 
    ii. To Charter Township of Ypsilanti $25.00
      If picture is needed + 7.00
        $32.00
  Those 16 years of age or older will receive a 10 year passport.
 
  If you are 15 years of age or under, you will need 2 checks, money orders or cashier.s checks, made payable as follows
    i: To U.S. Department of State $60.00
 
    ii. To Charter Township of Ypsilanti $25.00
      If picture is needed + 7.00
        $32.00
  Those 15 years of age or under will receive a 5 year passport.
 
  b. Passport Cards
The Passport Card is a wallet-size card that can only be used for land and sea travel between the United States and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. The card provides a less expensive, smaller and more convenient alternative to the Passport Book for those who travel frequently to these destinations by land or by sea.
  If you are 16 years of age or older, you will need 2 checks, money orders or cashier.s checks, made payable as follows:
    i: To U.S. Department of State $20.00
 
    ii. To Charter Township of Ypsilanti $25.00
      If picture is needed + 7.00
        $32.00
 
  If you are 15 years of age or under, you will need 2 checks, money orders or cashier.s checks, made payable as follows
    i: To U.S. Department of State $10.00
 
    ii. To Charter Township of Ypsilanti $25.00
      If picture is needed + 7.00
        $32.00

5. Personal appearance by ALL applicants

All applicants must personally appear to submit passport application. Once the application is completed and fees are paid, the Township Clerk.s Office will forward the application to the Passport Agency in Chicago, IL.

NOTE: Ypsilanti Township is a Passport Acceptance Facility, we DO NOT issue passports.

Passport applications are accepted in the Clerk.s Office from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Township retains the execution fee and the fee for photographs taken ($25.00 execution fee and $7.00 photograph fee). All other fees are mailed with the application.
